One of my obsessions when it comes to custom wall mural imagery is architecture. Be it an ultra-modern expanse of glass building skin, or a worn painted brick facade, there are limitless possibilities when using architectural elements as a jumping off point for a printed mural. Of course, there are plenty of buildings that can be showcased as a whole, but what really excites me is using just a portion of a building, abstracting it, until the element seems more like a modern pattern than an actual structure.

Take the custom wallpaper installation in the inspiration room for example. The photograph is of an apartment building in Australia that has undulating terraces off the face of the building. The image was then flipped 90 degrees clockwise, making the serpentine balconies run vertically as opposed to horizontally. The change in perspective gives the mural an even more surreal flare.

And while an over-sized headboard can be dramatic, substituting a wall mural such as this for the headboard is even more striking. Since we haven't touched on this custom wallpaper imagery inspiration in a while, we're happy to bring back architectural elements. This is the fourth installment in this series, and we don't see an end in sight. The presence that a wall mural featuring architectural elements has can't be ignored.

The inspiration room gets a brand new dimension of depth with the image of the crook of a building. The window grids ground the look with a bit of rigidity, while the subtle variations of blues and purples of each pane lends a playfulness to the mural. With each pane being colored slightly differently from the next, a sort of glass patchwork quilt effect is created.

If subtle color variations aren't your bag, consider creating the wall mural in black and white, a great treatment for any architectural wall mural. With an image like this, there's a voyeuristic element to the wallpaper, as if you're looking in at another world. In keeping with this tradition, we're offering another inspiration room featuring an architectural wall mural. Instead of focusing on a detail in a facade or a specific material, this mural depicts a large apartment complex in Germany shot from afar.

Initially, the image was much more colorful. We muted the colors of the mural to blend more with the dominant neutral tones of the inspiration room. Taking the image to black and white would also be a good idea for this space. Additionally, the layout of the building in the mural has a slightly uneven tempo, which is a nice counterpoint to the perfect symmetry of the furniture placement.

Another clever element of this custom wallpaper installation is that when viewing the mural, one gets the impression of being elevated, like having a bird's eye view from a high rise building. This is a great way to add an additional feeling of space to a smaller room. Mirrors can always accomplish this task as well, but the unique feeling of space that an architectural wall mural can offer is exciting new way to create volume in a room.

This custom wallpaper installation is another in our series focusing on our obsession with architectural elements. Wall murals like this have an engaging quality due to the trompe l'oeil effect of the fire escape. Trompe l'oeil is essentially an optical illusion, giving the appearance of three dimensionality on a two dimensional surface. In this mural, the fire escape, doors and AC units appear to actually be positioned on this interior living room wall. Shadows and highlights help to buttress the illusion of three dimensionality, making the custom wall mural very present in the room.

One artist that works brilliant trompe l'oeil illusions is Julian Beever. Beever specializes in sidewalk drawings that not only look real in person, but photograph incredibly well also. When it comes to decorating, bringing the outdoors in typically entails capturing a sense of nature within your home. There's always the literal translation, utilizing plants, decor, and wallcoverings that mimic the outdoors. However, here in metro Detroit, we have a completely unique set of expectations of our outdoor spaces and how we utilize them in our homes.

If you're like us, you have an appreciation for urban decay. The surface finishes, patinas, and textures of rusting metal, flaking paint and brick are interesting to us. Granted, the time has passed when finding beauty in the apparently ugly was groundbreaking; indeed, the notion has in some situations moved well beyond subversive to simply cliche. Regardless, we still are seeking out new and exciting custom wallpaper projects that capture the essence of bringing the outdoors in, be it purely natural or capturing the sense of urban decay.

Custom Wallpaper Imagery: Architectural Elements

Some of the most interesting imagery you can use for a custom wallpaper project are architectural images. It can seem redundant to some, having a wallpaper mural of a wall put on, well, a wall. But as you can see from the picture on the left, there are some exciting ways to use architectural elements in your custom wall mural.

A detail from a building can be even more interesting than an image of the structure as a whole. Much in the same way a satellite photograph reveals patterns and nuances one wouldn't see on ground level, an architectural detail becomes an abstraction of the original subject. Our sample image is a perfect example of this. There certainly isn't enough information going on in the image to denote its location, but there's more than enough visual interest to make this image a great candidate for custom wallpaper. The repetition of form and intersecting lines, matched with the slanted perspective of the shot provide the main thrust of the image, while the cool blue and gray tones support the overall look.
